Balgowan is a tiny hamlet situated in the heart of the enchanting Natal Midlands. Balgowan's central location in the Midland's Meander makes it an ideal base from which to explore the numerous cottage industries and studios which characterise this art and craft route, and is also known for the Boschoek Golf Estate built around the pretty, but challenging 9 hole golf course.

The art of country hospitality has been perfected in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Art and pottery studios, herb and flower gardens, cheese factories and weaving workshops are just some of the delights visitors to Balgowan can indulge in, as well as a spot of trout or bass fishing or an exhilarating round of golf.

Originally part of a Zulu Royal hunting Preserve the Balgowan area was inhabited by the Voortrekkers and the British in the early 1800s and has inherited a distinct British Colonial atmosphere. With its hilly terrain, lush green vegetation and its not infrequent winter snowfalls, it is little wonder that the area has been called "Little England".

Balgowan can be reached, either by branching directly off the N3 between Mooi River and Pietermaritzburg, or by taking the R103 which is the more scenic old Johannesburg to Durban road.
