Rietvlei Nature Reserve District Overview Information

Rietvlei Dam and Nature Reserve is one of the world's largest urban nature reserves, 3800 hectares in extent, situated south of Pretoria but still within the city limits. The Rietvlei Nature Reserve lies very close to the R21 highway between Pretoria and Johannesburg International Airport at a height of about 1700 m above sea level, which is about 300 m higher than Pretoria. This scenic 4000 hectare reserve is a sanctuary for rhino, buffalo and various antelope species. Rietvlei Nature Reserve is mainly visited as a day excursion and offers scenic picnic spots and day hikes for those who like to relax in the bountiful natural scenery of this beautiful area. Night drives are also available.

Two types of sport take place at the Rietvlei dam, yachting and angling. Northwest of Rietvlei Dam is the clubhouse of the Sail Yacht Club, and the angling area is on the northern and western shores. Motor boats are not allowed as the noise disturbs anglers and the game.
