Gonubie Overview Information Just 15 minutes north east of East London, Gonubie is a quaint seaside village with scenic walks, a boardwalk from the grassy verge of the beach to the lagoon mouth, indigenous fauna and flora and some of the best beaches on the wild coast. The estuary at Gonubie River mouth abounds with marine life and the lagoon is encircled by sheer cliffs that offer prolific birdlife. Gonubie's beach is one of South Africa's blue flag beaches. Whales and dolphins can be seen form the cliffs above the lagoon. Water activities such as river and rock fishing, surfing, paddling and boating are enjoyed by visitors from all over the world. The Gonubie River is navigable for 5 km and is a perfect spot for picnics. The Gonubie Nature Reserve is established around a coastal wetland and is home to over 160 species of birds. The Kwelera Nature Reserve is located just north of Gonubie.
