Hekpoort Tourism Information

The town of Hekpoort is situated on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountain, only a few minutes drive from the Hartebeespoort Dam. Hekpoort is accessible from the south via a pass through the Daspoortrand. The author Vincent Garruthers wrote a book called The Magaliesberg and in the book he describes how Gert Kruger, brother of president Paul Kruger, was appointed commandant of the districts of Moorivier and Magaliesberg in the 1800s. During his appointment he established the farm, Hekpoort in the Moot Valley, this was around 1845. The land that Hekpoort was established on belonged to Chief Mogale wa Mogale.

During the Boer War, the British attempted to clear the valley and foothills below the range, these attempts were reinforced by the establishment of fortified outposts. One at the foot of the Hekpoort pass is still intact today and is preserved as national monument. Built in 1901 under the direction of Lieutenant-General Barton, it was nicknamed Bartons Folly. It is suggested that because it differed from the typical two storied blockhouses of the time it was therefore something other than what it appeared to be, it was called a folly.
