Hillcrest Overview Information

The small village of Hillcrest was founded in 1895 as a farming settlement, and started growing very slowly since the introduction of tarred roads only in the 1970s and 1980s. Hillcrest now subject to administration by the Outer West Council, hosts many new middle-income residential estates such as the renowned Plantations, due to the recent and rather swift expansion of the town.

The town centre has also undergone immense change since it's earlier days, with shopping centres sprouting up at literally every corner. Hillcrest boasts a very clean environment as well as an almost rustic vibe, with scenic views scattered throughout. The town is linked to two major highways cutting travel time to and from Durban and surrounds considerably.

Hillcrest hosts an exciting night life with various clubs, pubs and an ever changing list of trendy new restaurants. The town is located near the awe-inspiring Valley of 1000 Hills which is in itself a popular tourist destination. Shongweni Dam provides visitors with decent fishing and picnic facilities, whilst the Game Reserve proves to be an amazing hiking and birdwatching venue. Then there are the Shongweni Polo Grounds which often serve as backdrop to thrilling games of polo, occasionally hosting matches between our national team and visiting opponents such as the likes of Argentina. Inanda Dam, which lies along the route of the renowned Dusi Canoe Race, is also close.

Hillcrest is also on the route of the internationally recognized Comrades Marathon which sees runners finding their way past the town on route to Pietermaritzberg annually. There is also the Springvale nature reserve which allows visitors to embark on scenic trails which follow the course of the valley. Hillcrest is also the host of a number of golf courses which include Camelot, Augusta, Cotwold downs and Taglewood; all of which are situated in the town itself.
