Humansdorp Overview Information

The small town of Humansdorp lies at the foot of the Kouga Mountains just off the N2 about 90kms to the West of Port Elizabeth. It is a convenient spot for stopovers, being only a 20 minute drive from the beaches of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis. Humansdorp marks the Eastern end of the Cape's fynbos region and has some exquisite displays. With more than 2000 species of fynbos recorded locally, the annual Fynbos Festival draws crowds of flower lovers. Humansdorp has started to uplift itself and has its eyes on becoming a major tourist destination.

During the first half of the 1800's a Rev. Alexander Smith traveled regularly from Uitenhage to hold services for the local farming communities just outside the present town. Humansdorp takes its name from one Matthys Human, who, in 1849, gave part of his farm for the establishment of a town. Stands were laid out four years later in the shape of the British Union Flag. The town is renowned for its indigenous wooden furniture.
