Murrayfield Overview Information

Murrayfield is a small suburb in eastern Pretoria, flanked by the N4 to Witbank and by Grace Avenue. There are schools, shops and businesses aplenty, with easy access from the N4 freeway to Witbank via the Watermeyer Street or Rossouw Street turn-off. The suburb of Murrayfield is ideally placed for visitors to the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, a favourite spot for city birdwatching. The CSIR Conference Centre is just a few blocks away and the suburb is well placed for rugby enthusiasts visiting Loftus Versveld. Murrayfield is close to Pretoria East and Kloof hospitals, Menlyn shopping centre, supermarkets and restaurants.

Pretoria itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. During the First Boer War, the city was besieged by Republican forces in December 1880 and March 1881. The peace treaty, which ended the war, was signed in Pretoria on 3rd August 1881 at the Pretoria Convention. Pretoria achieved official city status in 1931.
