Rietfontein Overview Information

The Pretoria suburb of Rietfontein lies a few kilometers to the north-east of Pretoria’s CBD. Rietfontein is one of Pretoria’s older suburbs, sitting between Waverley to the East and Wonderboom South to the West. The suburb is bordered in the North by Wonderboom Nature Reserve which occupies the kopje that splits North and South Pretoria. The suburb is ideally placed for visitors with plans to visit the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve with its many species of birds, or the Bon Accord Dam just a few kilometers to the North.

Pretoria itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. During the First Boer War, the city was besieged by Republican forces in December 1880 and March 1881. The peace treaty, which ended the war, was signed in Pretoria on 3rd August 1881 at the Pretoria Convention. Pretoria achieved official city status in 1931.
