Sandton Municipality was formed in 1969 and was a very large Municipality that incorporated all of the suburbs encompassed by Bryanston and Sandown. Sandton Municipality has now been incorporated into the Greater Johannesburg Municipality. The area covered by Sandton Municipality is one that gives the impression of a large park-like residential area, with its thousands of trees and wide avenues and streets.

The Sandton Municipality includes the Sandton City shopping complex, which is, argueably, the largest non-metropolitan shopping centre in the southern hemisphere. Also included in the area are the Sandton Convention Centre and Sandton Square. Sandton Municipality has fast become the new business centre for Johannesburg, as well as housing a great number of beautiful open areas that have been given over to golf clubs and nature reserves. The Sandton Municipality houses a number of first class hotels, most of which can be found along the Rivonia Road. There are numerous townhouse complexes in the area.
