Simon's Town Overview Information

Simon's Town is a quaint naval village, 40 km from Cape Town en route to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Named after the Governor Simon van de Stel, who chose to use the town as a winter anchorage for the Royal British Navy, the town was handed over to the South African Navy in 1957. St George's Street, in Simon's Town, is known as the historical mile and 21 of the buildings are over 150 years old. A stroll along the little cobbled roads to explore restored, old cottages and houses is a delight and there are a number of shops, restaurants and coffee shops as well as a navy museum, toy museum and a waterfront emporium to explore.

Simon's Town's beaches are really worth a visit, particularly Boulders Beach with its famous penguin colony and the local golf course has wonderful views over the sea. The Cape Peninsula National Park is 7750 hectares of bird watcher's paradise and 1100 indigenous plant species, some of which occur nowhere else on earth.
