Springfontein Overview Information

Springfontein, meaning “jumping spring” derived its name from an artesian spring located on Springfontein Farm and was settled in 1904

Situated 150 kilometres south of Bloemfontein on the N1, the national road linking Capetown and Gauteng, Sringfontein is an important railway junction with the lines from Port Elizabeth and East London meeting at this point. Another line runs west to the diamond producing town of Koffiefontein.

Die Bome, which is the house Emily Hobhouse resided in on her visits to Springfontein, is located east of town next to the site of the Boer Concentration Camp. The concentration camp cemetery holds over 700 Boer and 300 British victims of the Anglo Boer War.

Also of interest are the San Petroglyphs, which are rock engravings carved by San artists around 1000 years ago.

Guests of Springfontein can visit the Koi fish hatcheries in the town or indulge in a little bird watching with over 130 species having been recorded here.
