Swartberg Overview Information In the deep southwest of KwaZulu-Natal surrounded on three sides by the Eastern Cape and lying in between Kokstad and Underberg lies the small village of Swartberg. Swartberg is the centre for the local farming community and is a hive of activity during local stock sales and sporting get-togethers. Several nearby farms have accommodation in the form of bed-and-breakfasts or self-catering accommodation. The East Griqualand Information Office is located just outside the village on the way to Underberg. Local attractions in and around Swartberg include the Thule Rustler's Route. Officially opened in 1997, the Thule Pass was built by farmers in the area as a way of enabling fast reaction to stock rustling. The pass rises to over 2500m and offers some quite spectacular views of the whole of East Griqualand. The pass is some 13 kilometres from the border with Lesotho and is a challenging one to two hour drive if you are an experienced four by four owner.
