Ulundi Overview Information The area around Ulundi has been the birthplace and stronghold home of the Zulu kings over many years. During the days of apartheid this town was the capital of the then KwaZulu homeland and boasts a very sophisticated legislative complex. There is little to see in the town itself, but the area has a number of important historical sites. Fort Nolela with its stone-walled redoubt, which can still be seen, marks the spot where Lord Chelmsford camped in 1879 before engaging the Zulu in battle on 4th July of that year. There are other battle sites in the area, notably KwaGqokli Hill, the site of King Shaka's victorious battle over Zwide, leader of the Ndwandwe, in 1818. Just a few kilomtres to the east of Ulundi is the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park. This park has been a game reserve since 1897, making it one of the oldest game reserves in Africa. Before 1897 it was a hunting area reserved for the Zulu kings. The park measures more than 30000 hectares and is home to many species including both white and black rhino, elephant, buffalo and lion. Amuseum on site depicts a Zulu iron smelting kraal as it was some 200 years ago. Though only a small park compared with Kruger, this nature reserve is well worth a visit.
