Umvoti River Mouth Overview Information

Just opposite Stanger on the Dolphin Coast lies Blythedale Beach, at the Southern end of which is the Umvoti River Mouth. This is another quiet seaside village that is being developed. It has a popular swimming, surfing and fishing beach, with a nature conservancy and ski boat launch site at Umvoti River mouth. Fishing is not as good as it used to be due to the degradation of the Umvoti River. The first white family to settle at the Umvoti River Mouth was a Mr Willem Landman, who settled here in 1836 and was married to Piet Retief's daughter, Maria. In 1840 an American missionary named Grout established a mission station nearby and encouraged the growing of sugar cane in the area. This resulted in the building of a sugar mill at Umvoti near to the river mouth. There is plenty to keep one occupied in the area, including the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, Dukuduku Forest, several large game reserves, the Umgeni Bird Park, Umvoti river mouth and boat launch area and the St Lucia Wetland Park World heritage Site. There are also a couple of hot springs resorts nearby.
