Just about any local can tell you the legend of the ghost of Uniondale. The town of Uniondale is situated on the R62, south of Willowmore, and north of Knysna. Initially Uniondale was two townships, Lyon and Hopedale. Later the two amalgamated and a new town, Uniondale, was proclaimed in 1865. A Dutch Reformed congregation was started and a church built.

Uniondale was formerly a major ostrich farming and wagon-building centre, but almost all have been replaced with sheep, tobacco, or wheat farms. A watermill that was constructed in 1852 by James Stewart has been restored and in 1977 it was declared a national monument.

There is also an Anglo-Boer War monument situated on a hill outside town. From the monument you can see most of the town of Uniondale.

At Williamsburg farm, about 30 kms from Uniondale, you can enjoy 4x4 trails and hiking in the mountains. Animals that you are likely to see on your hike include baboon, bushpig, springbok, duiker and grey rhebok.
